WHO WE ARE...
The Winnipeg Jazz Education Collective is a partnership and working group between the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra, the Manitoba Band Association, and the University of Manitoba Jazz Department.
Our Mission...
At our core, we are dedicated to expanding opportunities for young musicians to learn, grow, and perform. While our focus is on the youth of Winnipeg, we welcome participants from any locale to join us! We are not just about creating the next generation of professional artists.
Our mission is to help music lovers, of all kinds, to find their unique place in the world of jazz: whether that is performing in a community band, starting your own garage band, composing original music, or simply enjoying the vibrant jazz scene as a listener. Every musical journey is worth celebrating!
Our aim is to foster a community where lasting musical friendships are made, and unforgettable musical memories are created.
The Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra (WJO)
The Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra (WJO) is Canada’s first community-
based, non-profit, professional jazz orchestra. Founded in 1997
(registered charity in 2000), the WJO has matured to become an
important part of Winnipeg’s cultural landscape, which is reflected
in the ongoing support the organization receives from the Manitoba
Arts Council, the Winnipeg Arts Council, the Winnipeg Foundation,
and other sponsors. The mandate of the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra
is to be an instrumental force in the promotion and development of
big band jazz in Manitoba and beyond: through performance,
composition, recording and education.
